Malaria is a potentially fatal disease and is one of the world's leading public health concerns. It is caused by parasites transmitted to humans by the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
Anyone can get malaria. The majority of malaria cases occur in countries with malaria transmission. People from malaria-free countries can become infected by traveling to malaria-endemic regions or through a blood transfusion (although this is very rare).
